Professor Kumar's research approach is to identify and model domain knowledge about consumer and managerial decisions to inform our understanding. His methodological approach connects two distinct, streams of empirical research. First, he develops structural models of consumer and firm behavior, informed by microeconomics and game theory. Second, he develops theory-based machine learning for applications in business, designing machine learning algorithms using human knowledge from different disciplines. These methods serve to improve algorithmic performance and also achieve human interpretability, and trustworthy machine learning. Overall, he is interested in developing trustworthy and transparent models for consumer and business decisions.
Professor Kumar's research works have been recognized and won several awards from professional organizations like ASA, INFORMS and Marketing Science Institute. He serves as a senior editor at Production and Operations Management, associate editor at Management Science, and as a reviewer for most top-tier journals in the field. He has also served as a mentor and advisor to several doctoral students, who have gone on to faculty and industry positions. His research and perspectives have been quoted by a variety of media including the Wall Street Journal, Fortune, Forbes and National Public Radio. Prior to joining Purdue, Professor Kumar's served on the faculty at Harvard and Yale. He completed his doctoral studies at Carnegie Mellon University, where his research was awarded the William Cooper Dissertation Award.
